Italy Government Reaffirms Commitment to Somalia’s Security Transition

Italy’s unwavering support, alongside that of the EU, remains crucial in this transition period.

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Italy confirmed it remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Somalia’s security transition under the African Union-led mission.

In an exclusive interview with Arlaadi Media Network, Italian Ambassador to Somalia, Pier Mario Daccò Coppi, reiterated Italy’s dedication to working closely with European Union (EU) states to enhance the effectiveness of the African Union’s new security framework, AUSSOM.

Ambassador Daccò Coppi emphasized Italy’s proactive role in ensuring a seamless transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The shift, which marks a critical phase in Somalia’s security sector reforms, aims to empower Somali national forces to assume greater responsibility for the country’s stability.

“We are committed to strengthening Somalia’s security architecture in close coordination with our European partners and the African Union,” said Ambassador Daccò Coppi.

“Italy has long been a key ally of Somalia, and our support will continue to focus on capacity building, military training, and institutional reforms.”

Italy, a key EU member, has played a vital role in supporting Somalia’s stabilization efforts through financial aid, technical assistance, and military training programs.

The country has been instrumental in EU-led initiatives such as the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) Somalia, which provides strategic guidance to the Somali National Army.

The transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM is expected to unfold in phases, with a gradual handover of security responsibilities to Somali forces.

While progress has been made in strengthening Somalia’s security capabilities, challenges remain, including the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab and the need for sustainable funding for Somalia’s defense sector.

Ambassador Daccò Coppi reaffirmed that Italy will continue advocating for international support to ensure a stable and secure Somalia.

He underscored the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement, security cooperation, and development assistance to consolidate peace and security in the Horn of Africa nation.

The African Union, in collaboration with Somalia and its international partners, is expected to outline further strategies for AUSSOM’s implementation in the coming months.
