The Federal Government of Somalia is facilitating peace talks between Sudan’s military-led government and opposition groups to end the long-standing conflict in the country.
Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, stated that Sudan holds a special place for Somalia due to its historical support in reconciliation efforts, education, and other areas of cooperation.
Fiqi emphasized the deep-rooted relationship between Somalia and Sudan, asserting that Somalia, now in a stronger position, cannot stand by and watch the ongoing crisis. He reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to fostering peace and mutual understanding between the conflicting parties.
The minister also made it clear that Somalia strongly opposes any actions that further fuel the conflict. He urged both the Sudanese government and the opposition to prioritize dialogue and peace.
“Sudan has always stood by Somalia and has greatly supported us. Our position is to bring together the opposition and the current government for peace talks in Mogadishu. We oppose any negative foreign interference in the matter,” said Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, Somalia’s Foreign Minister.
The unrest in Sudan has also affected Somali citizens, particularly students who had benefited from free education programs under former Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir’s administration. However, the ongoing conflict has disrupted their studies and lives.
