On Thursday, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, at the Presidential Palace, Villa Somalia. The high-level meeting centered on reinforcing the longstanding partnership between Somalia and the United Nations, while exploring ways to accelerate UN support for Somalia’s key priorities.
During the discussions, both President Mohamud and DiCarlo emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration, particularly in advancing Somalia’s national agenda of peacebuilding, political reform, and development. DiCarlo commended the Somali government for its impressive progress in several areas, including its ongoing military operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab, which has been a significant focus of the government’s strategy to restore security and stability across the country.
DiCarlo also praised the Somali leadership for its determination to implement democratic reforms, including the ambitious goal of achieving universal suffrage. This transition toward more inclusive governance is seen as a crucial step for Somalia’s long-term stability and growth. She reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s vision for democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law.
